Written by the preschool teacher who developed the program, “See Me Signing: Alphabet” provides a visual learning experience for the hand-shapes for the manual alphabet.
Janine Haldane has created the book, inspired by a poem she has taught to children to help them remember the hand-shapes. The mother of two believes there are many benefits of using sign language with hearing children. Learning signs early on gives children the confidence to interact with Deaf people who sign. Young children also can improve fine motor skills, and the “signs” draw pictures in the air, creating stronger memories for language and building vocabulary and literacy skills, she writes. “See Me Signing: Alphabet” features vibrant illustrations by Karen Davis Macdonald and photographs of the author and her children, Jack and Evelyn, signing the letters of the alphabet and a key word starting with each letter. Initializing each key word makes this sign language book very unique. The colorful and amusing drawings will keep young kids entertained from “A is for ant” to “Z if for zoo,” even as they learn how to sign the alphabet.
Author Janine Haldane has a degree in Deaf Education and has taught both Deaf and hearing children. Janine travels to different schools, teaching a special preschool program combining sign language and literacy. Karen Davis Macdonald, owner and artist of KDM Artistry with more than 25 years of experience, created the drawings that enhance the photographs in the book.
